CAEN is Michigan Engineering’s central provider of information technology services. We offer many entry-level and advanced employment opportunities for students, including those with work-study awards, and welcome students from all U-M schools and colleges. Applicants who can make at least a two-year commitment will have a greater selection of positions, due to the time to develop proficiency in many areas. All employment applications are kept on file for six months, so if you are not contacted about a position within that time, you are encouraged to re-apply.

Student employees at CAEN will gain experience in a wide variety of roles that administer and support the Michigan Engineering IT environment. Each position offers on-the-job training and allows interested and committed students to attain positions of increasing responsibility.

CAEN also understands the demands on a student’s time, and is able to accommodate flexible work hours around class schedules, exam preparation, and other coursework to support the academic success of our student employees.

The minimum hourly pay rate for student positions at CAEN is $15.00, but an employee’s actual starting rate will depend upon relevant qualifications and experience. All student employees are eligible for pay increases based on their abilities and performance.

Positions


Applications Support Technician

Students in this position work collaboratively with others as well as independently to problem-solve software and application issues. A familiarity with (or strong desire to learn) multiple operating systems, and excellent communication skills are prerequisites for this position. Entry-level and advanced positions are available.
Experience with the Windows and/or Linux operating systems and software applications is a prerequisite.

Classroom Technology Developer

This position is focused on supporting the audio and video systems used in Michigan Engineering classrooms. Students in this position will install, test and support AV equipment in classrooms, including microphones, mixers, signal processors, amplifiers, and speakers. In addition, students will: assist faculty with AV needs in classrooms; configure audio and video systems in classrooms for presentations, vocal reinforcement, assisted listening and lecture recordings; and perform quality assurance checks to identify problems in equipment or software used in classrooms. This position has the following prerequisites:

  • Experience with audio or video systems used in live events, presentation recording, or remote learning
  • Knowledgeable of techniques for troubleshooting and configuring audio and video systems
  • Ability to work independently with good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with video cameras, recording systems, digital mixers and tools such as Final Cut Pro X is desirable

Classroom Technology Maintenance Technician

Students in this position install, troubleshoot, and maintain audio, video and room control systems in Michigan Engineering classrooms. This position will involve working directly with instructors to assist them in their use of this technology. Opportunities exist to work evenings and weekends. This position has the following prerequisites:

  • Familiarity with audio or video systems used in live events, presentation recording, or remote learning
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with video cameras and recording systems is desirable

Computer Hardware Technician

This position is responsible for the deployment and maintenance of PC hardware, servers, operating systems, and software. Students in this position will also perform PC repair tasks including, system administration, testing, monitoring, and warranty parts replacement. This position has the following prerequisites:

  • A+ training is helpful but not required
  • The ability to methodically troubleshoot, diagnose and replace PC hardware
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting in the range of 30-50 pounds
  • Must be able to work independently or as part of a team

Data Analyst

Students in this position will use a variety of web and desktop tools to create repeatable processes for data aggregation, analysis, and visualization.
Experience using Linux from the command line, as well as a familiarity with scripting languages (e.g. Python or Ruby), is a prerequisite for this position. Familiarity with R (www.r-project.org) is a plus. On-the-job training is provided to expand skills in these areas.
Excellent communication skills and experience working both independently and collaboratively with others to problem-solve are essential.

Engineering Administration Desktop Support

Students in this position assist staff and faculty via phone, email, and in person to diagnose and repair problems with PCs, Macs, printers and mobile devices. This position supports Michigan Engineering’s administrative offices, including the Offices of the Dean, Associate Deans, Student Affairs, and Resource Planning and Management. This position has the following prerequisites:

  • Experience troubleshooting Windows 10 and/or macOS software and hardware
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Proficiency in Android and/or iOS is a plus

Help Desk Consultant

CAEN Help Desk consultants are the primary point of contact for the Michigan Engineering community to ask questions, troubleshoot problems, and report issues related to CAEN services. Some examples include:

  • Accessing computers in on-campus CAEN labs, or via remote access services
  • Running software, troubleshooting errors, or accessing a particular application
  • Triaging general IT questions, and assisting in finding the appropriate University resource

Help Desk consultants assist the Engineering community via email, online chat, phone, and walk-up/in-person help. Consultants may also assist with documenting various IT issues for online reference, and developing tools to improve the overall College environment. A desire to learn new applications and online tools is encouraged.
Excellent communication skills are a prerequisite for this position, as well as experience working collaboratively with others.

Lab Inspector

Students in this position visit CAEN labs and verify that computer workstations operate properly, and ensure that the labs are clean, orderly, used appropriately, and otherwise operating according to a high standard. They deliver, stock, and inventory lab supplies. As time permits, students may also assist in the development of tools and documentation that improve lab inspector efficiency and the CAEN lab experience.

Linux System Administrator

This position is responsible for the deployment and maintenance of computing systems and their associated application environments — desktops and servers. Students in this position test and perform quality assurance on system and application software, perform routine systems administration functions, and program and support their system users.

Mobile Applications Developer

Students in this position will develop native applications and web resources for use on mobile platforms such as iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android. Projects will focus on making Michigan Engineering information and services more accessible to faculty and students using mobile phones and tablets. This position will involve a range of activities including research of existing products and best practices, developing and supporting new applications, and testing on a variety of devices.
Experience with (or a strong desire to learn) current development tools and languages for iOS and/or Android platforms is a prerequisite for this position.

Network Technician

Students in this position assist in the day-to-day network support for all Engineering departments. They also troubleshoot network problems to make needed repairs, and report their findings through a trouble ticketing system.
Experience with network-related technologies and computers, excellent communication skills, and an ability to solve computer-related problems are prerequisites for this position.

Office Assistant

Students work in the CAEN business office, and provide front-line customer service by fielding both internal and external callers and rerouting them to the appropriate area within Michigan Engineering. They also assist staff with administrative duties, including: copying and filing, sorting and delivering mail, messenger service, data entry and other duties as assigned.
Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word, and Windows 7 is desired. Previous customer service experience is preferred. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and written while working with a diverse group of staff and customers. This position is entry-level and all duties can be taught through on-the-job training.

Project Manager Assistant

Students in this position aid in the deployment of various Michigan Engineering IT projects. The person hired will assist with developing project schedules, mapping project timelines, working with team members to track and update project status, and preparing project dashboards.
Applicants should have a strong interest in learning about and gaining experience in project management. The position requires extensive use of Google spreadsheets, Google documents, and online project management software.

Salesforce Intern

Students in this position work with a CAEN Salesforce administrator to optimize Engineering Salesforce instances, as well as work with stakeholders to identify needs, draft solutions, and then implement custom solutions to the Salesforce instance.
Experience with CRM system implementation using Salesforce.com platform is a required qualification.
Michigan Engineering implemented Salesforce CRM in 2015 and has been using it to track and manage alumni and graduate prospective students among multiple administrative units.
The Salesforce consultant will work with a CAEN Salesforce administrator to optimize Engineering Salesforce instances, including the design, implementation, and maintenance of workflows, triggers, dashboards, and reports used to manage relationships with alumni and prospective students. The candidate for this position will work with stakeholders to identify needs, draft solutions, and then implement custom solutions to the Salesforce instance. This person will also create documentation and proper training for any new features implemented as part of this project.

Web Developer I

Students in this position will assist with CAEN’s Web Publishing Service, a WordPress-based content management platform. You will be a point of contact for users to answer questions, write documentation, and work with HTML and CSS to create and edit web pages.

Will desire to create clean, accessible, and well-constructed content; HTML and CSS are important. Experience with WordPress and programming (Google Sites/Apps Script, Python, PHP) is a plus. On-the-job training is provided to expand skills in these areas, making your skill set more valuable to current and future employers. Excellent communication skills and experience working collaboratively with others to problem-solve are essential.

Web Developer II

In addition to many of the responsibilities of Web Developer I, Web Developer II students assist with the creation, improvement, and maintenance of web applications for Michigan Engineering. Opportunities include building custom functionality for WordPress and working on a variety of custom tools that support workflow and data use throughout the College. Web Developer II students also provide mentorship to Web Developer I student team members.

Successful applicants will have some experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WordPress, Python, PHP, MySQL, Google Apps Scripting, and/or modern JS frameworks. Previous experience with web-database interactions and/or scripting languages is preferred. On-the-job training is provided to expand skills in these areas, making your skill set more valuable to current and future employers. Excellent communication skills and experience working collaboratively with others to problem-solve are essential.

Windows System Administrator

This group is responsible for the configuration, deployment and maintenance of operating systems and other software and for providing the infrastructure to support those efforts. Students in this position will perform various systems administration tasks, testing, monitoring and programming.
