AI Services at U-M

Services

U-M ITS provides a suite of custom AI services that are available to all university students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, the Go Blue AI Assistant can be accessed as a web version and as a mobile app available on the Apple Store or Google Play Store.

  • U-M GPT – a conversational AI tool designed to assist users with academic and administrative tasks.
  • U-M Maizey – allows users to enrich their AI experience based on a custom dataset provided.
  • U-M GPT Toolkit – the most advanced and flexible service offering, designed for users who require full control over their AI environments and models.
  • Go Blue AI Assistant – connects users with U-M AI services and provides an engaging and user-friendly interface to enhance the campus experience.


General Support

There are several AI resources and support options available to the U-M community, including virtual “office hours” in which you can engage with other users.

  • ITS AI Website – features detailed information about AI at the University of Michigan, as well as a listing of events and audience-based resources, guidance, and training opportunities.
  • ITS AI Virtual Office Hours – are available periodically via Zoom to assist faculty, students, and staff interested in learning more about U-M AI services and how to use them with coursework, emails, presentations, daily life, or simply to hear how others use them.
  • AI Community of Practice (AI-CoP) – common interest group open to anyone within the U-M community, focuses on all things related to artificial intelligence. The goal of AI-CoP is to collaborate, share knowledge, and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in AI. Whether you’re an experienced professional or just starting to learn about this exciting field, you are welcome to join. 
    • AI-CoP meets periodically via Zoom, and also provides a Slack workspace to encourage ongoing discussions. To receive future meeting invitations or be part of the Slack workspace, join the MCommunity group: [email protected]. The Slack workspace is available at um-engin-openai.slack.com.
  • AI Events at U-M – listing of upcoming events (both in-person and virtual options) surrounding the topic of AI at U-M.

Funding Support

AI Maizey Grant – this initiative aims to help support faculty and staff with their implementation of Maizey or ToolKit in their courses. Learn more about the AI Maizey Grant, and how to apply for this award.

U-M GPT

  • U-M GPT is used by students, faculty, and staff to help them complete day-to-day tasks such as document summarization, idea generation, and other complex tasks.

U-M Maizey

  • Faculty have used Maizey in many Canvas courses to support student learning. 
  • Researchers have used Maizey to compile and query past years of PhD theses to help current PhD students answer research questions.
  • The Electric Vehicle Center created a Maizey project that is helping student teams learn from teams of the past and technical experts from the college and major industry-leading companies.

Michigan Engineering GenAI Guiding Principles

Michigan Engineering has established guiding principles for the use of Generative AI (GenAI) in research, education and administration, aiming to harness its potential to boost productivity and creativity while mitigating risks. A dedicated GenAI Task Force was commissioned to develop these guidelines, which will evolve in response to the changing AI landscape.
