College of Engineering Classroom Types & Equipment

As someone teaching in the College of Engineering, it is important for you to be aware of the different classroom options offered at the University. Courses are typically assigned to classrooms well in advance, so it is recommended to reach out to your departmental scheduler or the College Registrar’s Office if you have questions, or specific needs related to the type of classroom that best fits your teaching style.

In addition, if you have questions about structuring your course content, assessments, and classroom activities to take advantage of the classroom space, reach out to CRLT-Engin to schedule a one-on-one consultation with an Instructional Consultant

Central Campus Classrooms / Non-Engineering Classrooms

The College of Engineering does not handle scheduling or manage the technology in these rooms. If you have been assigned a classroom on Central Campus or in a building that is not a College of Engineering building, please reach out to those schools or colleges for information about their rooms. For more information on rooms with support provided by CAEN, visit our list of supported classrooms.

College of Engineering Supported Classrooms

Standard Classrooms

Many of our classrooms fit in the “Standard Classroom” category. This means their furniture is set up in standard rows facing a lectern at the front of the classroom. This furniture is difficult to move. While all of our classrooms have standard equipment such as a Zoom PC, lecture capture, whiteboard capture, etc., many of our rooms have slightly different additional features such as handheld microphones, audience participation microphones, or differing numbers of projectors.  For an overview of all rooms, visit our list of CAEN-supported classrooms page.

To see the features of the room you have been assigned, as well as a panorama, visit our room scheduling system and search for your room.

Group Learning Classrooms

Group learning classrooms are spaces configured to enable and allow group work. The tables are fixed in place, but either the room is set up intentionally to allow for group work, or alternately by moving chairs, you can create group spaces.

The College has several group learning classrooms available for instruction. Please work with your departmental scheduler to request a group learning classroom for your course.

If you would like to request a group learning classroom for your course, have your scheduler request “Seating: Team Tables” when scheduling your course.

Flexible Classrooms

Flexible classrooms have moveable furniture allowing the instructor to change the room’s layout to fit best how they teach. Tables and chairs are easy to move, typically on locking rollers. This enables faculty to have traditional row seating in one class session, and small group tables in the next.

While flexible classrooms can be configured based on the instructors’ needs, it is up to the instructor and their class to ensure their desired layout at the beginning of the class. We frequently see instructors put a diagram up before the class starts indicating the desired layout, and the students assist with configuring the furniture as they enter the room, before the start of the class.

The College has a number of these flexible classrooms available for instruction. Please work with your departmental scheduler if you would like to use a flexible classroom or require student displays. If you are interested in learning more about how to teach in a flexible classroom, contact CRLT-E

If you would like to request a flexible classroom for your course, have your scheduler request “Seating: Tables Moveable” when scheduling your course.

Flexible Team-Based Learning Classrooms

Flexible team learning classrooms are a subset of flexible classroom spaces configured to maximize active, collaborative learning and multimodal teaching. All furniture in these rooms is flexible, but these spaces include additional equipment, such as individual displays to share student work.

The College has several of these flexible team-based learning classrooms available for instruction. Please work with your departmental scheduler if you would like to use a flexible classroom and require student displays.

If you would like to request a flexible team-based learning classroom for your course, have your scheduler request “Seating: Tables Moveable” and “Equipment: Team Technology”  when scheduling your course.

CAEN Lab/Classroom Dual-purpose

CAEN provides computing resources to students throughout the College. As part of this, there are a number of CAEN Lab facilities. We have converted several of these rooms to classrooms during the weekdays – and CAEN labs in the evening when demand for these computers is the highest.

CAEN Lab/Classroom Dual-purpose – Lecture Style

Instructors in this space can use the available computers at each seat, enabling students to work during the class live on computers. Alternately, with the touch of a button, the computers, monitors, keyboards, and mice can be lowered into the desk resulting in a traditional classroom with rows of tables and chairs. During nights and weekends, the computers are raised and students can use the computers as they would in our typical CAEN labs.

To request a room with computers in it for all class meetings for a particular course, when scheduling your course request “Computer Lab: PC”. To request it for a single or several occurrences view our “Reserving a CAEN lab” page.

CAEN Lab/Classroom Dual-purpose – Group Style

These are CAEN labs that are set up in Flexible Team-Based Learning style. They have computer workstations at each group space that are available to use by students in the classroom. When the room is not reserved, the computers and group stations are available for general use by students.

If you would like to request a CAEN lab/classroom dual-purpose – group style for your course, have your scheduler request “Seating: Tables Moveable” , “Equipment: Team Technology”, and “Computer Lab: PC”  when scheduling your course.

Room Features

Standard Room Features

Some room features are available in all College of Engineering-owned classrooms, including:

Custom Room Features

Handheld Microphones

Several of our larger classrooms have handheld microphones in addition to the standard lavalier microphones. These microphones enable multiple presenters to have a handheld and pass around microphones as needed.

Audience Microphones

Many of our classrooms are outfitted with audience microphones. This enables lecture recording or Zoom to pick up the voices of those seated out in the classroom without additional microphones being required. These microphones can be turned on and off at the podium if required.

Interactive Screen

To request a room with a Wacom display, have your scheduler select “Equipment: Interactive Screen” when setting up your course.

Student Displays

Ability for instructors to push content to multiple displays around the room or alternately allow students to work in groups and display their content on their independent screen. To request a room “Equipment: Team Technology”

Multiple Simultaneous Content Displays

Allows the instructor to have different content on the displays at the front of the classroom. They can use the Room Assist/Snapshot Mode application to do so. Currently, the only room this is possible in is 1060 FMCRB.

Snapshot Feature

Allows the instructor to have different content on the displays at the front of the classroom. They can use the Room Assist/Snapshot Mode application to do so. Currently, the only room this is possible in is 1060 FMCRB. If you would like to use this feature contact [email protected].

CAEN Reservable Labs

CAEN has several computer labs that are reservable and available for students to do classwork on. Many of these are walk-in/first-come first-served basis. Several of our CAEN labs can be reserved for larger group events. This could include traditional classes, events that require access to computers, study sessions, etc. For more information on how to reserve a CAEN teaching lab, visit our page on Reserving a CAEN Computer Lab

To request a room with computers in it for all class meetings for a particular course, when scheduling your course request “Computer Lab: PC”. To request it for a single or several occurrences view our “Reserving a CAEN lab” page. If you require CAEN Lecture Recording in these spaces also choose “Equipment: Lecture Capture” to ensure you are placed in a room that has lecture recording as part of it.

CAEN teaching labs may or may not have lecture recording or Zoom PC’s available in them. See the chart below for info as to what is available in those spaces.

Departmental Owned Class/Labs

Individual departments have rooms that they use for class labs. All equipment and technology in these rooms are managed and maintained at the departmental level. Any requests to utilize that space should be sent to departmental contacts.
