Lecture Rewind is a learning tool that allows students to absorb material presented during class time at their own pace – without drawing unnecessary or unwanted attention to themselves.
From their own device, students can view material shared on the screen or the whiteboard, rewind to any point during the active class session, and zoom in or out on any image to get a clearer view of the content.
Note that while Lecture Rewind does not play back audio, live transcription can be turned on. It is best used when present in the room, though can be used while attending class remotely via Zoom.
What is it?
From their own device, any student enrolled in the class has the ability to rewind the slides or whiteboard image to review any content that has been presented during class up to then, but may no longer be visible in the room. They can even zoom in on any image to get a clearer view of diagrams, small writing, or complex equations.
While there is no audio component to the feature, students are able to see machine-generated transcription of the lecture while it is still in progress in case something was hard to hear.
How is it useful?
Giving students control over image magnification and the ability to go back to a previous image can improve the ability of any student to understand the material and remove accessibility hurdles in the classroom.
The fine print
Lecture Rewind is accessible only to enrolled students during class time and only if recording was previously scheduled through that course’s Lecture Recording site, regardless of whether that recording is ever published. Note that Lecture Rewind does not play any audio. It is intended for students to use as a follow-along tool from their own devices, whether in person or via Zoom.
How do I enable it?
If Lecture Rewind was not enabled when the site was created, you can enable this tool in your site settings by going to your Lecture Recording course site, checking the Allow Lecture Rewind checkbox, then clicking Save.
How do students use it?
Students can access Lecture Rewind by going to the Lecture Recording link in Canvas while their class is in session. Then, they would click the Lecture Rewind button to open the viewer, allowing them to rewind, zoom, & see transcription of the class while it is happening.
