Software Considerations for Instructional Modalities

CAEN is available to offer support when identifying course software titles and the potential impacts on students based on the course modality. CAEN supplies many teaching tools and software used in classrooms. Depending on the type of course or program you are teaching, there may be impacts on how your students are able to interact with the software titles used in your course. Review the program modalities to understand how your software choices may be impacted. Please reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions.

For the purposes of this webpage only, we use these definitions to clarify the groups of individuals we are talking about:

  • Students – individuals who are enrolled in a degree granting program
  • Learners – individuals who are a participant in a certificate or non-degree granting program

Potential Program Modalities

  • Residential Degree Programs offer only in person classes. In this traditional structure Instructors and students learn synchronously on campus. CAEN software titles are available to all eligible students in this mode of instruction. Please review the general engineering course software considerations when evaluating software for your course.
  • Residential Programs with Hybrid Options offer equivalent online instruction of in person courses. Due to this being a residential program, the expectation is that the students enrolled are still residing on campus and CAEN software titles are still available to all eligible students. Please refer to the general engineering course software considerations page if software will be used in this class.
  • Matching Residential and Online Degree Programs The online program does not require a student to reside locally, as they will be completed 100% remotely. Classes will mirror in person classes and may consist of synchronous and asynchronous components. These will use the same recorded lectures and course content. Due to the range of residential status students may have, and the need for remote access to software, CAEN’s online degree program software considerations page should be consulted.
  • Online Only Degree Programs do not require a student to reside locally, as they will be completed 100% remotely. Classes may consist of synchronous and asynchronous components. These programs and classes will be unique online programs with unique course content developed specifically for online only courses. Due to the range of residential status students may have, and the need for remote access to software, CAEN’s online degree program software considerations page should be consulted.
  • Online or Hybrid Professional and Continuing Education Courses do not require a learner to reside locally as they may often be completed 100% remotely. Classes may consist of online only or synchronously hybrid options. These are paid programs that offer continuing education opportunities.  Some of these programs may include certificates that can later be stacked towards a degree granting program. Due to the range of residential status learners may have, and their non-student status, CAEN’s online non-credit certificate software considerations page should be consulted.

The University has provided definitions for the different modes of online learning.
