In addition to the General Software Considerations, when choosing software for an online non-credit certificate program the following should be considered:
- CAEN provides many open source titles that can be used by anyone. Many vendors restrict access of software titles to students for credit bearing classes only. This would impact your abilities to use these titles for non-credit earning purposes. Reach out to CAEN to verify if software of interest may be used by learners enrolled in Certificate or Professional Development programs. If using an open source title, make sure to communicate the minimum software and hardware requirements to incoming learners.
- CAEN, as well as some vendors, have licenses that allow academics to download a software title at no cost. CAEN has reviewed titles that allow use by learners and will confirm if your titles are able to be used in a Certificate or Professional Development program. Make sure to communicate the minimum software and hardware requirements to incoming learners.
- CAEN remote access has location restrictions and capacity limitations. Due to license restrictions, many software titles may not be accessed remotely from off campus or outside the country. Please consider alternatives and open source options that will be more readily available to international learners. If you think you have a need to use CAEN’s remote access machines please contact [email protected] to explore what options are available.
- Access to University technology and tools may be restricted for foreign learners. Some foreign governments may restrict access to the internet, which may impact a learners access to course materials and software. CAEN is committed to working with learners but cannot guarantee full and uninterrupted access to course technology and tools for international learners.
- The University must comply with US Export Regulations. Some software licenses may not be accessed from outside the United States and therefore learners who are outside of the United States will be unable to access these titles. CAEN is prepared to help you determine which licenses have export control restrictions.
The University has provided definitions for the different modes of online learning.
