In addition to the General Software Considerations, when choosing software for an online degree program there are additional restrictions on software selection. CAEN is prepared to assist with meeting licensing requirements. Please reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions.
- CAEN, as well as some vendors, have licenses that allow students to download a software title at no cost. Using these titles can accommodate licensing restrictions regarding locations as well as allowing the software to run locally on student computers. Make sure to communicate the minimum software and hardware requirements to incoming students.
- CAEN provides remote access to many software titles, as can be found in the CAEN Software Listing. Due to license restrictions, many software titles may not be accessed remotely from off campus or outside the country. CAEN is able to provide you with what regions our licenses may be used in, please verify that a title can be used in an online course. Please consider alternatives and open source options that will be more readily available to international students.
- CAEN provides a large pool of remote use machines for students to access software titles. If your course needs remote access to a software title synchronously, this needs to be communicated with CAEN so we can allocate resources appropriately. CAEN will have a greater remote machine capacity in off hours. Additionally, keep in mind that each operating system is accessed differently and has different titles available.
- CAEN offers many software titles that provide similar functions. Some of these titles will be more available to access in a remote capacity or we have more licenses available. Is a title required for your course work or only a recommendation? Some obstacles can be removed by looking at alternatives.
- Access to University technology and tools may be restricted for foreign students. Some foreign governments may restrict access to the internet, which may impact students’ access to course materials and software. CAEN is committed to working with students but cannot guarantee full and uninterrupted access to course technology and tools for international students.
- The University must comply with US Export Regulations. Some software licenses may not be accessed from outside the United States and therefore students who are outside of the United States will be unable to access these titles. CAEN is prepared to help you determine which licenses have export control restrictions.
The University has provided definitions for the different modes of online learning.
