The CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE)

The CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE) is the desktop computing experience for Michigan Engineering students using software on a CAEN computer. The CLSE is available for the Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux platforms, and is designed to enable ease of use and enhance productivity for student academic work.

The software libraries bundled with the CLSE includes a large set of engineering-specific applications covering a wide range of disciplines, as well as tools for general productivity. The license restrictions applied to applications are intended to give Michigan Engineering students access to the software they need for completing coursework and performing academic/non-commercial research.

Faculty Consultation

CAEN is available to assist Michigan Engineering faculty interested in exploring how software can be integrated into their courses. CAEN staff members are ready to work one-on-one with faculty to research various software sources, find solutions that address course needs, and oversee software installation and implementation into the CLSE. Interested faculty should contact CAEN with questions, or to request a consultation.

Software for Students at No Cost

CAEN works with software vendors to find academic software that Michigan Engineering students can install on their personal computers at no cost. In many cases, the software applications are only accessible to students who are enrolled in a for-credit U-M course during the current academic term.

The current list of academic software that is available to Michigan Engineering students is collected in our Knowledge Base.
