The CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE)

The CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE) is the desktop computing experience for students using software on a CAEN computer. It is designed to enable ease of use and enhance productivity for College of Engineering students. The software bundled with the CLSE includes a large set of engineering-specific software applications covering a wide range of disciplines, as well as software for general productivity.

Two software editions are deployed to CLSE computers: a "Student Instructional Edition" for students completing coursework, and a "Student Research Edition" for students performing non-commercial research. Both editions of the CLSE are available for the Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux platforms. Computers are labeled according to the edition they contain.

Selecting an Operating System
All CLSE computers are "dual-boot," meaning both Windows and Linux are available anywhere the CLSE is deployed. To select a different operating system, reboot and select the desired OS. To reboot from the Windows login screen, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click OK to accept the CAEN Conditions of Use. Click the red arrow in the lower-right corner of the screen, then select Restart. To reboot from the Linux login screen, select Restart from the list of options in the lower-left corner of the screen. Login screens for each edition and platform are shown below.

Linux Login Screen Windows Login Screen
Student Instructional Edition Linux Login Windows Login
Student Research Edition Linux Login Windows Login

As the computer reboots, a black and white screen will be presented showing the operating system options available. Press the up/down arrow keys to highlight your choice, then press the Enter key.

Faculty Consultation

CAEN is available to assist Engineering faculty interested in exploring how software can be integrated into courses. CAEN staff members are available to work with faculty to research various software sources, find solutions that address course needs, and oversee software installation and implementation into the CAEN Lab Software Environment.
