CAEN Access Eligibility

  • In order to access CAEN computer labs and remote access services, an individual’s role at the College of Engineering must fall into one of the groups listed below.
  • Based on one’s role, access to certain services may or may not be available, including access to specific software (see our online Software Listing for license restrictions).
  • All individuals must be active and in good standing with Michigan Engineering, as verified by official University records (e.g. Wolverine Access).
  • These eligibility restrictions are in place to ensure the proper use of University of Michigan information technology resources, and that the College of Engineering is in compliance with software license agreements, as outlined in the U-M Standard Practice Guide Policy 601.03-3.

The CAEN computers located in the Duderstadt Center are available to all U-M employees and enrolled students. Students must be registered for at least one U-M course during the current term.


Eligibility Details

1. Engineering Students Registered for a U-M Course:

  • Students with a declared major in a Michigan Engineering program who are registered for a U-M course during the current term.
  • Students with a declared major in LSA Computer Science who are registered for a U-M course during the current term.
  • Students with a declared major in LSA Applied Physics who are registered for a U-M course during the current term.
  • Students with a declared major in LSA Data Science who are registered for a U-M course during the current term.
  • Students with a declared major in the Master of Entrepreneurship program who are registered for a U-M course during the current term.

2. U-M Students Registered for an Engineering Course:

  • Non-Engineering students who are registered for a Michigan Engineering course during the current term. Eligibility is validated on a term-by-term basis.
  • Non-Engineering students who are registered for a U-M course that is cross-listed with a Michigan Engineering course during the current term. Eligibility is validated on a term-by-term basis.

3. Regular Employees or Course Instructors:

  • Regular (non-temporary) faculty and staff whose appointment is current and has a status of “Active” in the College of Engineering.
  • Professors Emeriti whose appointment is current and has a status of “Active” in the College of Engineering.
  • Regular U-M faculty who are listed as the primary instructor for a Michigan Engineering course during the current term.

  • Non-Engineering students who are members of a Michigan Engineering student project team in the Wilson Center, and are registered for a U-M course during the current term. Eligibility is validated on a term-by-term basis, as confirmed by the faculty advisor for the team. More info…

7. Temporary Employees:

  • Temporary employees whose appointment is current and has a status of “Active” in the College of Engineering.

8. Engineering Outreach Program Attendees:

  • Coordinators of Michigan Engineering outreach programs may request limited CAEN computer lab access for their program attendees. Access is only granted to the lab(s) during the dates they have been reserved for the program. More info…
  • Note: Due to licensing restrictions, outreach program attendees may not have access to log into the CAEN computers located in the Duderstadt Center.

9. Sponsored Affiliates:

  • Individuals who have been provided with an MCommunity Sponsorship by their department, but hold no active College of Engineering appointment, are not eligible for CAEN Access.
  • Note: Individuals may have access to the CAEN computers located in the Duderstadt Center, if they are enrolled or employed in any U-M department.
